Are you using social media to make trusted connections?
Melanie Mackie is the Social Stylist and founder at Scarletta Media. Melanie works with female entrepreneurs and petite businesses to support and encourage them to powerfully show up online, speak their authentic truth, share their wisdom and expertise to create and establish their unique social style and living brands.
Having been immersed in the social world since 2008, Melanie was an early adopter of social media marketing in the UK and has worked on online campaigns with business owners and SME’s across a range of sectors.
Carving out an authentic personable social identity online is a challenge for many and she intuitively unlocks her clients potential and supports and encourages them to show up online and speak out. To give themselves permission to be who they really are whilst demonstrating their unique talent. And to feel competent to use the online world with ease and in their own unique social style and flow. Which means they feel empowered to tell their stories, confidently able to share their expertise, love to connect with and serve their people as well as grow their petite businesses.
How important is social media when first starting a business?
When you start out social media is a brilliant tool to help you get your business, services and expertise out there quickly. It doesn’t take long to create an online presence or cost an extortionate amount of money to get going and you have the opportunity to reach far more people on your door step or globally online than if you were cold-calling, advertising or attending numerous networking meetings.
We’ve entered the era of modern marketing since the social revolution which means that regardless of what kind of business you have, products you sell or services you offer, it is expected that you have a professional online and social presence available so people can get to know you, love what you do and trust you to do business or become an online connection.
Be savvy and learn how to build a solid foundation from the inside out, create an online presence that you’re proud of and tells people precisely what you do, how you serve and what you’re really all about so they choose you easily.
There is much “noise” on social media how does an aspiring entrepreneur set themselves apart from the rest?
Focus on creating an authentic social media style and living brand that really articulates the heart and soul of you and your business. Have a clear and authentic message. And be prepared to share your knowledge online willingly so others see you as an expert.
Show up consistently and demonstrate your wisdom and expertise in your own tone of voice. This way you don’t blend in with the noise, you stand out and get noticed for being human, respected for offering valuable content and give people a very clear insight as to what it looks and feels like to work with you, as opposed to your competition.
By having a clear brand and style people will get a feel straight away if they believe you are the right fit and the person to help them. Or if not, move on to someone else. And that’s OK, you don’t have to appeal to everyone.
Is it possible to build meaningful business relationships using social media?
Yes absolutely. However to do this you’ve got to be willing to be open, transparent, engage and be human. And not just lurk in the background and wait for others to come to you. The ideal way to build meaningful relationships is to actively seek out like-minded people online and start the conversation. Join online groups. Participate, add your own views, news and insights. Then your online relationships have the opportunity to be more heart-felt and will grow into something deeper and you never know where these conversations and relationships will end up.
What are some of the strategies recently started women entrepreneurs can use to find their social media voice?
Begin by getting really clear on who you are as a person, what your values are, what you believe in and know what difference and impact you want to make in the world. Why do you want to have your own business? What is your mission and vision? Who do you really want to connect with and serve? And how?
All of these things are essential to have clarity on before you set off trying to appeal to everyone and anyone. Get clear on your own intentions from the inside out. As when you know all of this, your social voice flows and comes far more naturally and easily to you.
You know precisely what to share, where the ideal places are online for you to be and how to express and communicate your own unique social voice and message from the heart that “speaks” to the people who’d love to hear from you and connect.
Learning and social media how are these connected?
When you start out running your own business, there is so much for you to learn outside of your day job and what you’re really good at. The brilliant thing is you can find out pretty much everything you need answers to online. Whether it’s resources from other websites, YouTube videos, webinars, podcasts and of course joining social groups and communities. It’s all there at the click of a button. And of course you never stop learning, starting your new business in just the beginning. So make full of all the resources available to you wherever possible.
It’s also great to make time to connect with others who also have their own businesses and celebrate each other’s successes, help each other overcome common challenges and just be brilliant advocates and champions of each other’s business. Creating a trusted and supportive tribe around you is invaluable and a lifeline to keep you going.
