Our Founder shares why entrepreneurs should travel.
Wearing a new pair of eyes. With every journey, I see a new perspective and elevate my senses. Always with a new pair of eyes.
The social entrepreneur solves problems that are specific to social, environmental or cultural issues. This entrepreneur wants to make a profit in a socially responsible way. In so doing they don’t compromise purpose for profit. Travel for the social entrepreneur is not limited to experiencing a new culture or snapping shots for our memory database or for social media, but as a mechanism for finding solutions to complex problems. Whether it be in our home country or abroad there are so many common threads and observing new approaches or simply wearing a new pair of eyes opens the flood gates for innovative and ground breaking ideas to emerge.
We leave our old eyes at home, so that we can fully experience what the new journey has to offer. We wear a new pair of eyes, so as to not corrupt our current view.
As I navigated the vast gardens of the mausoleum, absorbing the architecture and learning the story I understood that Humayun’s wife Empress Bega Begum was so grieved by her husband’s death that not only did she commission this project but dedicated her life to constructing what would have been then, the most opulent of all mausoleums in the Mughal Empire.
My mind immediately contrasted this with the well known Taj Mahal in Agra, built some years later by another Mughal Emperor, Shah Jahan in honour of his most favoured wife, Mumtaz. The basis for the construction of both of these awe inspiring UNESCO World Heritage sites, was plain and simple: love. Empress Bega loved and Emperor Shah loved. This was my view, the power of love and the depth of grief so overwhelming that it led to the construction of masterpieces that can now be appreciated by many the world over.
My eyes, saw love, what do your eyes see?
Buildings are a manifestation of who we are as human beings. They reflect our human ambitions, relentless in our pursuits to transform, create and manipulate. Whenever I travel I study the buildings and marvel at the doors, I imagine what it was like to live in the period when they were built. More importantly I keep my eyes wide open as to not miss that golden opportunity to see something differently.
This is why entrepreneurs should travel, particularly social entrepreneurs; it should be a part of our business strategy to take several trips yearly to unknown and distant places. We should see them as pilgrimages, educational endeavours, cathartic must haves and sensory enhancement ventures. Deemed as important as our social media strategies and sales charts. They should be a requirement!
Was there something in particular that I saw that helped me to understand something a little better about humanity at Humayan’s tomb? Of course. Were there things I thought of when I heard the story that made my mind conjure up wild imaginations? You better believe it. Did the visit make me see a new perspective? Without a shadow of a doubt.
And this is why we travel, so that we can gain a new perspective. Once we return home what do we do with our new pair of eyes? I will leave that with you.
